# Inventory Evaluation
# Overview
PetroAI allows you to create custom inventory well sticks that can be used to predict well performance using any of your models. Inventory wells are organized into batches and scenarios, enabling independent evaluation of development plans or assumptions. This functionality allows users to quickly execute several engineering workflows such as:
- Completion sensitivity analysis
- Pad design optimization
- Well spacing degradation
- Parent-child well spacing optimization
- One year or five year asset development planning
- Business development or M&A analysis
This guide walks through the process of creating and evaluating inventory wells.
# Terminology
- Anchor Build: A build that provides the structure grid and PDP wells for the inventory evaluation.
- Batch: A group of inventory wells. Each batch is typically computed in a separate build.
- Scenario: A subgroup of wells within a batch. Scenarios allow multiple design options to be compared within one build.
- DSU ID: A group of related wells. DSU (Drilling Spacing Unit) IDs help organize wells for filtering and visualization, but do not affect computation.
- Well Name: A unique identifier representing a single inventory well.
# Create a New Evaluation
- From the home page, click the Evaluate button next to the repository where you want to run the analysis.
- Enter a name and select an anchor build from the drop down. If no builds are available in the menu that means there repo has no anchor builds and you will need to contact PetroAI support for help specifying an anchor build.
- Add an optional tag or description to help identify the evaluation.
- Click on Create to open the map editor.
# Map Tools Overview
The left side of the map has several tools for navigation, creating gun barrels, and drawing well sticks.
- Delete: Removes selected wells from the map.
- Zoom: Plus/minus buttons to zoom in/out (mouse scrolling also works).
- Full Screen Mode: Expand the map for better visibility.
- Center on Wells: Centers the map around inventory wells.
- Lasso Select: Click and drag to select multiple inventory wells. Only inventory wells can be selected - PDP wells are static.
- Measure Tool: Measures distance in feet or miles. Click once to start, click again to stop. Do not click and hold.
- Create Gunbarrel: Draw a straight projection line intersecting wells to view a cross-section in the gunbarrel viewer. Click once to start, click again to stop. Do not click and hold.
- Draw Well Stick Pattern: Draw a sequence of new inventory wells. Click and hold, dragging the cursor to add new wells.
# Right Panel Overview
The right side panel contains several tabs for configuring the page and creating inventory wells.
- Map Settings: Configure the map settings.
- Well Type: Filter to vertical or horizontal wells.
- Intervals: Filter to specific intervals.
- Filter by Completion Year: Filter to specific completion years.
- Inventory Settings: Configure the inventory wells.
- DSU ID: Label grouping related wells.
- Well Name Prefix: Prefix used for auto-generated well names.
- Scenario Name: Sub-group of wells within the batch. Each scenario is computed independently during the build, meaning wells in separate scenarios do not interact or influence each other.
- Interval: Target interval (list is referenced from the anchor build).
- Relative Landing: Vertical landing position within interval. Relative landings decrease with depth (0 = bottom, 1 = top).
- Completion Date: Affects relationship calculations (e.g., parent, child, sibling).
- Lateral Length (ft): Length of horizontal section.
- Well Spacing (ft): Perpendicular spacing between wells.
- Gunbarrel Settings: Configure the gunbarrel viewer.
- Show: Configure what is displayed on the gunbarrel viewer.
- Label Position: Change the position of the well labels on the gunbarrel viewer.
- Label Suffix Length: Truncate well names to N characters.
- Interval Tops: Configure which interval tops are displayed on the gunbarrel viewer. When no interval tops are selected, the gunbarrel will display all interval tops.
- TVDSS Above/Below Buffer: Configure the buffer above and below the interval tops.
- Insights: Directly access any of the insight dashboards from the anchor build. This is useful to quickly review model diagnostics or PDP prediction from the selected model.
- Launch Tab: Launch the inventory evaluation or view previous evaluations.
- Settings: Change the name of the evaluation or change the anchor build. You can also delete the evaluation.
# Add Inventory Wells
- Configure the inventory settings in the right panel to match your desired wells.
- Create a gun barrel view across the desired section of the map.
- Click the Create Gunbarrel tool (highlighted yellow when active).
- Click once to place the start of the projection line and click again where you want to end the projection line.
- The Gunbarrel View will populate with all intersected wells and available structure lines.
- Select the Draw Line Pattern tool.
- Click and drag the mouse to draw the well layout. Wells will be added along the line based on spacing settings. Well groups can be rotated as they're being drawn. The new wells will appear on the map, in the gunbarrel viewer, and in the inventory wells table.
- Click Save at the top to store the wells, or click Refresh to discard all unsaved wells.
Building Multiple Scenarios
If you want to build multiple versions of the same pad or section, you can do so by changing the Scenario field for each iteration. The Scenario can be changed in the right panel before inventory locations are added or you can edit the field in the inventory wells table.
# Delete Inventory Wells
- Use the Lasso Select tool to choose wells.
- Press the Delete key or use the map’s trash icon.
- Click Save to apply the deletion.
- If you accidentally delete wells and haven't saved yet, click Refresh to restore them.
# Reposition Wells
Wells can be edited in the map, the gunbarrel or the inventory wells table. All three views are linked, so changes in one reflect in the other.
# Map View
Single Well:
- Deselect all tools.
- Hover over a well until a pointer icon appears.
- Click to select the well (endpoints will be highlighted).
- Drag the well using the crosshair cursor.
- To rotate or manually change the lateral length of a single well, drag an endpoint after selecting.
Multiple Wells:
- Use the Lasso Select tool to select desired wells.
- Drag wells by grabbing any one of them.
- Rotation is not available for multiple selection.
# Gunbarrel View
- Wells can also be moved from the gunbarrel by selecting and dragging.
- To enable dragging, click the Toggle Drag icon on the top left of the chart.
